Electric Bike Company - FAQ

Batteries and Charging

Why do you have a rack-mounted battery?

After many years of research, we have decided this is the optimal placement for the battery. The battery’s internal charger with retractable cord makes recharging easy and convenient. A 26 amp large controller and up to 18ah or almost one kilowatt of power allow for powerful hill climbing. The batteries also feature an alarm system and smart BMS. The built in light is very convenient and safe for night riding. The 5 year battery warranty comes with our unique plug and play system, so quick and easy replacement or maintenance can be done, if ever needed. Although a center-mounted battery is a little more balanced, engineers believe our placement is the best alternative, without compromising any of the above features. Feedback from our customers is in support of the clean, beautiful lines and ease of access with the Step Through style, without having the battery blocking access. Although not ideally balanced, we found the benefits of a rack mounted battery far out weigh center-mounted battery.

Do I need to buy the additional 5amp charger that you sell?

No, you do not. Our batteries have a patented technology with an internal charger and retractable chord that plugs directly into the wall outlet.

What is the difference between the two batteries?

We offer a 11.6Ah 48 volt and 17.4Ah 48 volt battery. The 11.6Ah’s range is 20 miles without pedaling and 50 miles with pedaling on Pedal Assist mode level 2. The 17.4Ah is 40 miles without pedaling and 80 to 100 with pedaling on Pedal Assist mode level 2. The 11.6Ah contains 500 watt-hours and the 17.4Ah contains 750. The 17.4Ah battery adds about 10 to 15 more miles per charge. Keep in mind that some factors may affect these numbers, including your weight, the wind, and the grade of surface you are riding on.

How should I store my bike & battery for long periods of time?

If you need to store your bike during a long period of time such as the winter months, please ensure that the battery is fully charged then turn off the master switch which is the red toggle button under the back end of the battery (you can normally leave this on if you use the bike regularly). Then remove the battery from the bicycle and store in a cool place. Following these instructions should ensure the battery will last you many years.

Does shipping come with the bike?

Yes. Our price includes all shipping costs within the continental United States.

How long does shipping take?

EBC bikes are 100% assembled to order in Newport Beach, CA. with global materials. They test and independently inspect, certify and ship fully assembled to your door. The building, testing and inspecting process can take anywhere between 2 and 4 weeks depending on how busy they get (sometimes up to 6 weeks during busier seasons). Once the bike is completed, shipping can take 5-7 business days depending on where you live.

The green of shipping:

The foam, corrugated, and corner board that is used to package and ship these electric bikes is made from recycled material, and are all materials are recyclable. The pallets are compostable in the greens/lumber cans, or as courtesy special pick up (most cities will take them).

Why mechanical gears are unnecessary

  1. Our motor can generate over 1200 watts of power for hill climbing and acceleration.
  2. We offer a 5 level pedal assist option.
  3. You have the ability to have 0 to 100% throttle assist while pedaling at any pressure.
  4. Shifting mechanical gears can be confusing when combined with our other options of 5 levels of assist, 0 to 100% throttle and pedaling pressure.
  5. Chains on mechanical gears can come off easily.
  6. Cable-actuated systems can erode and stretch, making mechanical gears unreliable.
  7. Maintenance costs are higher on mechanical gears than internal pedal assist options.

EBC bikes are equipped to accept a 7 speed mechanical gearing system. If you find that you still want a 7 speed, your local bike shop can add that. However, once you ride our bikes and feel the power, you may not find that you need mechanical gears. 99.9% of customers do not have them.

What height and weight can your bike support?

EBC frames can be adjusted for anyone from 4 foot 8 inches to 7 foot tall, with 7 different adjustment points. The bikes are sturdy enough to support up to 350 pounds, with maximum motor output of 1300 watts and going up to 28 miles per hour.

Is the motor loud?

Electric Bike Company’s 500-watt rear hub motor is powerful enough to ride up hills and against strong winds, while still maintaining a peaceful quiet ride. The rider can pedal, use throttle, or use pedal assist. No matter the settings, the motor remains silent. In addition, a brake disconnect will shut off the motor when coming to a stop. The rear placement of the motor allows for maximum safety and riding enjoyment.

Is there a Twist Throttle option?

No.

Having a twist throttle on an electric bicycle is very dangerous.

  1. As you are often getting on and off your bike, you can inadvertently twist the throttle when you lift your bike on a curve or while weaving your bike through pedestrians.

(Ideally you turn all the power off, but should you forget, having a thumb throttle is far safer)

2. On your bike, there are often times when you can hit  high speeds or get into bumpy terrain and need to grab your brakes pretty hard. On a motor bike, you have a back-up brake on your pedals- but on an electric bike, both brakes are on the handlebars- so it’s easier to grab both brakes with a full grip on a thumb throttle.

The EBC system comes with cruiser control - walk mode and other functions that make a thumb throttle definitely the way to go.

Why do you build your bikes in the USA using global materials?

EBC builds, inspects, tests and ships the bike fully assembled! Since they build the bike 100% to order, they can inspect each part. They also negotiate and have great relationships with each vendor to ensure the quality is maintained. They can also quickly and strategically update, change, enhance a part or process because this control gives them the leverage and insight to do so.

99% of all other E-Bike companies import the entire bike from e-bike manufacturers that build bikes for them and other customers. These manufacturers brand them differently for different countries and these brands cannot update, change and evolve as quickly as EBC can here in the USA!

What class are Electric Bike Company Bikes?

EBC electric bikes can actually be set up easily in the settings for three different classes:

Class One: Pedal Assist feature top speed is 20mph

Class Two: Pedal Assist & Throttle top speed is 20mph

Class Three: Throttle top speed is 20mph and Pedal Assist up to 28mph

How do I find the perfect EBC Bike Fit?

To determine the perfect EBC bike model & wheel size you will need the following information:

Height: Your actual height, without shoes on.

Inseam: Your inseam is the distance from the sole of your foot, along the inside of your leg, up to your pelvic bone. This is not the length of your pants, but the actual measure of your leg.

The book method is the easiest way to measure your inseam.

  •  Remove your shoes and stand flat with your back against the wall.
  • Hold the book vertically between your legs, against your groin and touching the wall. The book is the place holder for your saddle, so make sure it sits snug.
  • Make a small mark with the pencil on the wall at the top of the book.
  • Measure from the floor to your mark and you’ll have your true inseam.
